This post is long overdue for a number of reasons… but I’m happy to FINALLY reveal my top ten reads of the year 2017. I became an avid Goodreads user after my partner and his family introduced me to the app around Christmas of 2016. For the year 2017, I undertook a personal challenge of reading 75 books that year. During the winter semester of my Master’s, I was able to crush 36/75, and I reached my goal with two weeks to spare. This year, I am working a full-time job and have a few other things on the go, but I am still aiming to read about 50 books. Anyways, here is the list:
- The Polished Hoe by Austin Clarke — One of the most eye-opening fictional pieces on colonialism, passing, and sexual violence I have ever come across
- Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston — Atypical story of a prosperous woman in a black community
- The Autobiography of Malcolm X as told by Alex Haley — Learn about one of the greatest African American icons from childhood to adulthood
- Commonwealth by Ann Patchett — Although fictional, weaves personal histories in a way I have never seen before
- The Pagoda by Patricia Powell — Deals with the challenges of the transgender community in the Caribbean
- Fifteen Dogs by Andre Alexis — Seeing the eyes through the world of a dog makes me look at and interact with man’s best friend in a whole new way
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline – This was on my list since High School; compelling read that is soon to be a Spielberg-directed major motion picture
- Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese — Great story from the Native community, and how we all have things in common (such as love for hockey)
- One Day We’ll All Be Dead and None of This Will Matter by Scaachi Koul — True life lessons dealt to readers hilariously
- The Autobiography of My Mother by Jamaica Kincaid — The title is deceiving, as the mother in question is almost entirely imagined
