Book review: The Godfather

This year was the first year that I sat down and watched The Godfather in full. I’ve always admired Al Pacino as an actor, and was honestly surprised at myself for taking so long to watch the iconic film. Of course, Marlon Brando is known as the true star of the film, but the relationship between Don Vito Corleone and Michael is what sets the stage for this story to unfold.

After watching the second film, I was totally hooked. That same day, I went and ordered the novel. Believe me when I say that I could not put this book down. From start to finish, it is beautifully written. The characters are so vivid, and the images that author Mario Puzo puts forth are unmistakable.

Of course with films, some creative liberties are taken, and for the sake of the film, I think that the changes made are logical. However, I think the novel itself is flawless. There were no parts that were slow or unnecessary, and I was saddened by the ending, but only because the story was over.

Whether or not you love the movie, I think this novel offers something for everyone that appreciates a good story about family that’s laced with action, angst, and complicated relationships.
